Artist Statement

Typically I struggle with pressures of being a female and being misunderstood as a Christian. In response to the struggles of being a woman and a Christian, I often turn to fantasy and mythology which serve as a "lens" through which to understand my feelings. Fantasy is an important element of my work, because it is a statement about my faith. My belief in God and His miracles gives me faith that anything can possible. I just feel like it is not our place to "put a cap" on what He can do.

As I began to depict ancient mythology in my work, I learned more about stories of certain female creatures. I became fascinated with the parallels between the characteristics of these female creatures relative to current portrayals of women. My interest has developed into a self-portrait series. Through my art, I have played the roles of these creatures and used their situations to express or question some of my own. I have titled these creatures Bride, Widow, Hussy, Tease, Shrew and Damsel in an effort to force my viewers to think a little more about their circumstances in relation to modern female stereotypes.

Expectations of Beauty

"The first known mermaid stories appeared in Assyria, ca. 1000 BC. The goddess Atargatis, loved a mortal shepherd and unintentionally killed him. Ashamed, she jumped into a lake to take the form of a fish, but the waters would not conceal her divine beauty. Thereafter, she took the form of a mermaid. Human above the waist, fish below." (cited from Wikipedia)

I associated the term "Bride" with the mermaid creature, because clearly mermaids are known for their divine beauty. In modern culture, a Bride is typically expected and often pressured to embody societies ideas and standards of beauty. I feel that the "Bride" is an example of the modern "Mermaid" or beautiful woman.

Banshee Widow

Banshee Widow

Typical Emotional Woman

"A feminine spirit in Irish mythology, usually seen as an omen of death and a messenger from the Otherworld. The Banshee was an ancestral spirit appointed to forewarn members of certain ancient Irish families of their time of death. According to tradition, the banshee can only cry for five major Irish families. Although not always seen, her mourning call is heard, usually at night when someone is about to die. (cited from Wikipedia and irelandseye at http://www.irelandseye.com/animation/explorer/ banshee.html)

Widow seemed like an appropriate modern day portrayal of an emotional female. A widow has every right to be sad and cry after losing the spouse she loved, so she is a good candidate to relate to the ancient mournful Banshee.

Gorgon Damsel

Gorgon Damsel

Helpless little lady

The Gorgon was a terrifying female creature whose gaze was known to turn people to stone. "The name derives from the Greek word gorgós, which means dreadful." Probably the most famous of the three Gorgon sisters, is Medusa. Like any myth, there are differing accounts of origin, and I am interested in a not so well known portrayal or Medusa. "According to Ovid (Metamorphoses), a Roman poet writing in 8 AD who was noted for accuracy regarding the Greek myths, Medusa alone had serpents in her hair, and this was due to Athena cursing her" as punishment for being raped by Poseidon in Athena's temple. (cited from Wikipedia and further information derived from Ovid's Metamorphoses)

I was raised watching movies where there was always a "damsel in distress". There were typical helpless females who could not protect or save themselves. The "Damsel in distress" offers a modern parallel to the lesser known backstory of Medusa the Gorgon.

Fury Shrew

Fury Shrew

Hateful Female

"In Greek and Roman mythology, the Furies were female spirits of justice and vengeance. They were also called the Erinyes (angry ones). Although the Furies seemed terrifying and sought vengeance, they were not considered deliberately evil. On the contrary, they represented justice and were seen as defenders of moral and legal order. They punished the wicked and guilty without pity but the good and innocent had little to fear from them." (cited from Myths Encyclopedia)

A "Shrew" or an ill-tempered scolding woman serves as the perfect modern day Fury. A woman interpreted as evil or vengeful, but who is usually actually operat ing with good intentions. The "Shrew" is my modern day Fury.

Siren Hussy

Siren Hussy

Lady of the Night

Sirens were portrayed as "seductresses who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island. The term "siren song" refers to an appeal that is hard to resist but that, if heeded, will lead to a bad result." (cited from Wikipedia)

The sexually provocative Hussy is a perfect parallel to the ancient mythological Siren.

Nymph Tease

Nymph Tease

Promiscuous Temptress

"A nymph in Greek mythology is a female nature deity typically associated with a particular location or landform. Different from gods, nymphs are generally regarded as divine spirits who animate nature, and are usually depicted as beautiful, young nubile maidens who love to dance and sing; their amorous freedom sets them apart from the restricted and chaste wives and daughters of the Greek polis." Though Nymphs are sometimes considered provocative, there are several accounts of them fleeing from encounters with men. "Pitys was an Oread nymph who was pursued by Pan. According to a passage in Nonnus' Dionysiaca she was changed into a pine tree by the gods in order to escape him." (cited from Wikipedia)

Many women in modern culture might be considered "a tease" based on the way they dress or act. They are known to arouse sexual desire in (someone) with no intention of satisfying it. The "Tease" is my modern Nymph.

Eternal City

This is my depiction of heaven. I don't honestly think it is possible to understand completely the wonders of

our eternal future during this life, but it is nice to try and capture the beauty I envision.

This piece is based on the scripture 1 Peter 2.5

Transform (found objects)

This mixed media artwork is dedicated to three special people in my life that I lost: Amelia Allen, Robert Loveless and Thomas Ellis

This piece is to celebrate the beautiful lives they lived and the magic, purity and peace they experience now in heaven

The idea is that there are three bottles (each representing a person) circling around below the dome

the bottles are filled with water that evaporates (like the soul) and travels in to the sky (or in to the dome representing heaven)
